New Orleans Saints Eyeing Derek Carr as Ideal Quarterback Fit
Expert Identifies Ideal Destination for Las Vegas Raiders Quarterback Derek Carr
With as many as 10 teams in the market for a new quarterback heading into 2023, Derek Carr’s future with the Las Vegas Raiders remains uncertain. However, Carr’s no-trade clause allows him to control his destination, giving both sides the opportunity to find the best fit for the 31-year-old signal caller. According to Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report, the best fit for Carr is with the New Orleans Saints.
Sobleski believes that Carr’s rhythm passing style would mesh well with the offensive scheme of the Saints’ offensive coordinator, Pete Carmichael. With talented players like Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, and Chris Olave and a promising offensive line, the Saints have the pieces in place to make Carr’s transition seamless.
The main challenge for the New Orleans Saints in acquiring Carr lies in their lack of draft capital, particularly a first-round pick, to make a deal happen. The Saints are projected to be $58.59 million over the cap next season, and Carr’s contract demands are substantial. He is owed $121 million over the next three seasons, with $40.4 million fully guaranteed on February 15th.
To accommodate a potential Derek Carr trade, the Saints may have to get creative with post-June 1 cap gymnastics. Jameis Winston, Demario Davis, James Hurst, and Marcus Davenport are potential candidates for restructuring or release to create cap savings.
The New Orleans Saints currently have only Jameis Winston and Jake Luton under contract for 2023. Bringing in Carr would provide the franchise with a proven quarterback and the opportunity to compete at the highest level. With the right moves, the Saints could turn their quarterback situation from a weakness into a strength.
