Netherlands Select Seasoned Players for World Cup Squad

Experienced players Roelof van der Merwe and Colin Ackermann have been called back to join the Netherlands’ 15-player squad for this year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

They were not part of the team that secured their spot at this year’s World Cup by finishing as runners-up in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament earlier this year. Still, they have now been included in the list of 15 players who will compete in India during October and November.

Van der Merwe and Ackermann bring a lot of experience to the Netherlands team, which will once again be led by Scott Edwards. They played crucial roles in last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Ackermann was the second-highest run-scorer for the Netherlands in the tournament, and van der Merwe also made valuable contributions with bat, ball, and fielding. Both players have a lot of experience in various domestic competitions worldwide.

The Netherlands has high hopes for opening batter Max O’Dowd to score a lot of runs in the tournament. Star all-rounder Bas de Leede is also expected to play a significant role with both his batting and bowling skills.

Unfortunately, left-arm fast bowler Fred Klaassen is sidelined due to a stress fracture injury.

“Obviously Fred would be gutted to miss out. He would have been a big part of the bowling attack,” head coach Ryan Cook said.

Spinner Tim Pringle is recovering from a major surgery and has a few minor injuries, so he won’t be part of the main squad. However, the head coach mentioned that Pringle would be among the top choices as a backup in case of injuries.

Sybrand Engelbrecht is making his debut in the squad, having previously excelled at the U19 Cricket World Cup in 2008 for South Africa.

Additionally, there are two development players, Kyle Klein and Noah Croes, who are part of the touring group. While they may not be immediately called upon as replacements for injured players, they will join the team to gain valuable experience.

The Netherlands, under the guidance of experienced coach Ryan Cook, will play two warm-up matches before the World Cup. They’ll face Australia on September 30 and India on October 3.

Their first official World Cup match will be against Pakistan in Hyderabad on October 6.
