NCAA Committee Faces Threats After Mac Brown’s ‘Shame On You’ Comment
The NCAA committee is facing some serious threats after North Carolina HC Mac Brown’s ‘Shame on You’ comment amid the cancellation of Tez Walker’s waiver cancellation.
The NCAA program canceled some transfer waivers for student-athletes and wide receiver Tez Walker in one of them. The North Carolina officials especially head coach Mac Brown were one of those who publicly roasted the institution after it denied a waiver for wide receiver Tez Walker.
Brown said in an interview that,
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been more disappointed in a person, a group of people, or an institution than I am with the NCAA right now. It’s clear the NCAA is about the process and couldn’t care less about the young people it’s supposed to be supporting.”
There are many people who had objections to the Walker cancellation decision including ESPN Jay Bilas and Mac Brown who named Tez as honourary captain of the Tar Heel team.
Especially Brown’s, “Shame on you, NCAA. SHAME ON YOU!” remark created troubles for some committee members involved in regulatory decisions. They have been threatened and are cooperating with law enforcement.
On Tuesday, the NCAA Board of Directors released an official statement to explain their decision on the waiver policy.
Via NCAA statement that transferring multiple times “slows student-athletes progress toward a degree, especially with those who transfer later. It stands to reason that multiple transfers would further slow time to a degree,” and that “citing extenuating factors, such as mental health, does not necessarily support a waiver request but instead may, in some situations, suggest a student-athlete should be primarily focused on addressing those critical issues during the initial transition to a third school.”
According to the NCAA, 21,685 student-athletes entered the transfer portal this year. In Tez’s situation, UNC claimed that Walker wanted to be closer to home in North Carolina and had mental health challenges at his previous school, Kent State.
The Board also mentioned the UNC officials and Brown who spoke out loud on the Tez Walker situation and said they were “troubled” by their remarks.
“Those comments directly contradict what we and our fellow Division I members and coaches called for vociferously – including UNC’s own football coach.”
