NBA legend Michael Jordan donates $10M to Make-A-Wish
NBA superstar Michael Jordan will donate $10 million to Make-A-Wish USA on February 17 in honor of his 60th birthday. According to reports, throughout the 43-year history of the organization, his donation was the greatest one ever made by a single person. The 14-time All-Star has been a staunch advocate ever since he granted his first wish in 1989.
“Over the past 34 years, it has been an honor to work with Make-A-Wish and contribute to the joy and smiles of so many children. It has been extremely inspiring to see their perseverance and fortitude through such a trying moment in their life. There is no better birthday present than for people to join me in helping Make-A-Wish, enabling every child to enjoy the miracle of having their wishes come true” -Jordan on press.
The Basketball Hall of Famer was the first athlete to earn a billion dollars, and he is still one of just three sportsmen to do it, along with Lebron James and Tiger Woods, who are all Nike athletes. According to tax documents, Make-A-Wish has collected roughly $430 million in private donations over the past five years, putting it among the biggest nonprofits in the world.
In a statement, Jordan stated that his gift to the charity, which grants “wishes” to kids with terminal diseases, was made in recognition of his forthcoming 60th birthday on Friday.
Early in his playing career with the Chicago Bulls in 1989, Jordan began a partnership with Make-A-Wish; at the time of his most recent donation, he had already contributed more than $5 million.
