Naughty Dog Responds to Criticisms Over Troubled The Last of Us PC Release

The highly anticipated PC port of The Last of Us, originally a PlayStation exclusive, has arrived to a largely negative reception from fans. Players have reported numerous issues such as frame rate stuttering, crashes, and long loading times. The game has been review bombed on Steam and has received a “Mostly Negative” review score.

The Last of Us PC port was announced at The Game Awards in December 2022 and was initially set to release on March 3, 2023. The release date was later delayed by a few weeks, with the game finally launching on March 28.

Acknowledging Player Concerns

Developer Naughty Dog has responded to player concerns and promised to address the issues in upcoming patches. The studio has requested that players submit tickets for any issues they encounter via its support page. The “Known Issues” page lists some of the problems, including the game being unable to boot on systems that meet the minimum requirements and a potential memory leak.

Long Loading Times a Major Issue

One of the biggest issues affecting players is the unreasonably long loading times. Even with a high-end PC, it has been reported that the initial load time can take 45 minutes or more as the game builds and compiles shaders. Background shader loading also appears to be responsible for in-game performance issues. Naughty Dog has acknowledged this issue and has promised to prioritize fixing it.

Iron Galaxy Criticized for Porting

Some players have expressed frustration that Iron Galaxy was chosen to port The Last of Us to PC instead of Sony subsidiary Nixxes Software, which handled the well-received ports of Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Iron Galaxy is known for its infamous PC port of Batman: Arkham Knight, but has more recently worked on ports of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and Metroid Prime Remastered.

Despite the negative reception of The Last of Us PC port, Naughty Dog’s commitment to addressing player concerns is a positive sign. With upcoming patches and updates, players can hopefully look forward to a smoother and more enjoyable experience of one of the most beloved games of all time.
