MLS pays tribute to Grant Wahl
MLS honors Grant Wahl during opening week
Grant Wahl’s unimaginable passing sent shock waves in the entire US soccer community. It was three months earlier when Wahl collapsed during the quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands. His cause of death was disclosed to be Aortic Aneurysm.
Honorary gesture
It is the 28th season of the Major League Soccer and the association has decided to honor Wahl by reserving a seat in every team’s press box.
“Every MLS press box reserved a seat for Grant Wahl today as we paid tribute to the legendary soccer writer on opening weekend.
“As one of the most revered voices in soccer, Grant will forever be remembered for his immeasurable impact on the game.”
Most teams posted their tributes as well.
In addition to honouring the memory of Grant Wahl, clubs such Orlando City SC, Charlotte FC, and DC United made sure they honoured everyone who passed away during the off-season.
Orlando honored Dylan Lyons, who was brutally murdered while reporting in the Orlando area. Charlotte honored the memories of defender Anton Walkes, who passed away after suffering numerous injuries in a boat crash. DC United paid tribute to its club executive and one of the founding members of the MLS, Kevin Payne.
Moreover, US Soccer has decided to honor Grant Wahl by reserving a place for him in the press box during every single match that the US men’s and women’s team plays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
