Minecraft is Bringing its Creatures to Dungeons & Dragons
Minecraft has been a beloved game for many years and now, Mojang is teaming up with Dungeons & Dragons to bring some of their iconic creatures over to the world of tabletop gaming. The digital content, titled Monstrous Compendium Volume 3, will be available through D&D Beyond, the official portal for digital Dungeons & Dragons content. The partnership between Mojang and Wizards of the Coast was announced during a D&D Direct streaming presentation. This will allow fans of Dungeons & Dragons to experience some of the iconic creatures from Minecraft such as the Creeper, Enderman, and the Ender Dragon.
Design Work by Dan Dillon
The design work for the creatures coming from Minecraft has been handled by Dan Dillon, a veteran game designer with experience in both Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons. He explained that the creatures will not interact in the same way as other monsters in the game and will instead have some unique elements that make them more reminiscent of how they work in Minecraft.
Previous Entries in the Compendium Series
Previous entries in the Monstrous Compendium series have included Monstrous Compendium Volume One: Spelljammer Creatures and Monstrous Compendium Volume Two: Dragonlance Monsters. So far, only Spelljammer Creatures has been released as a PDF file, while Dragonlance Monsters was only made available through D&D Beyond. Volume 3 of the Monstrous Compendium will also be exclusively available through D&D Beyond.
D&D Beyond and One D&D
The Minecraft DLC for Dungeons & Dragons will be free for anyone with a valid login for D&D Beyond, which was purchased by Hasbro in April 2022. This platform is expected to be the linchpin of One D&D, the next iteration of Dungeons & Dragons, which will include character creation tools, item databases, and Dungeon Masters’ tools. It will also have a robust digital tabletop component, including 3D scenery and miniatures.
More Partnerships to Come
This is not the first partnership to bring outside IP into Dungeons & Dragons, as there have been partnerships with Nerds candy, Penny Arcade’s Acquisitions Incorporated, and Critical Role’s various campaigns. It seems likely that we will see more of these kinds of crossovers in the future, especially with the success of Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond initiative.
