Real Madrid legend, Marcelo, revealed that Messi was the toughest player he had to face during his 18-year-long career.
The Brazilian fullback gave Real Madrid 15-years of his career playing at the Bernabeu and today he stands one of the finest left back of his generation. He has been compared to his predecessor at both Real Madrid and at Brazil national team, Roberto Carlos and did wonders to fill his shoes. By the time, Marcelo left Los Blancos in 2022, he had won 25 major trophies with the club.
In an interview with The Athletic, Marcelo admitted that Lionel Messi was the toughest player he had to defend against. He stressed that the Argentinian still remains of the best in the game.
The duo continuously went against each other during the El Clasicos and produced some of the finest displays the sport has ever seen.
What did Marcelo have to say about Messi?
‘Messi is incredible, the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced,’ he noted of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.
‘We all know the quality he has even now, aged 35, and before it was the same.
The Brazilian mentioned that it is not just because of Messi but the quality Barcelona as a whole consisted of.
‘El Clasico has always been one of the best games to watch and play. I was lucky enough to have featured in one of the best eras of Clasicos.’
