Messi scored his 800th goal with a free kick goal
Yesterday, Argentina played Panama in a friendly, where Lionel Messi impressed with his performance. Messi and Argentina was playing their first match after winning the World Cup. It was a match where Messi-magic was on display as Argentina won 2-0 in Buenos Aires. The stadium was jam-packed and fireworks were seen in the sky as the crowd welcomed and celebrated the World Champions.
The World Cup winners controlled the game but it took them 78 minutes to open the scoring. It was Thiago Almada who scored from a rebound of Messi’s free kick which hit the post. Ten minutes later, Messi doubled Argentina’s lead as he scored his 800th goal in professional football. It was indeed more magical as he scored from a free kick.
The Milestone
Messi is now the second player to reach 800 goals after Ronaldo. The Portuguese holds the all-time goalscoring record with 830 goals to his name. Moreover, Messi is just one short of the 100-goal mark for the national squad which he could’ve achieved in this match if not for the numerous times he hit the post.
What did Messi have to say?
After the match, Messi took the opportunity to thanks the fans as he was smiling while he received the award. “I want to thank you for all the love we’ve been receiving . . . We told you we were going to do everything possible to win this,” Messi said as he got emotional.
“Let’s enjoy this because we went a long time without winning it, and we don’t know when we’ll win it again.”
