McTominay reacts to transfer rumors amid impressive form
McTominay linked with Newcastle United after a remarkable break with Scotland.
McTominay has been struggling to find his place in the Manchester United squad this season. Most of his appearances have come off the bench while he has been unable to replicate his old form. Under Erik ten Hag, the Scotsman has slipped down the pecking order, below the likes or Casemiro, Sabitzer, Fred and Christian Eriksen.
However, while on international duty with Scotland, McTominay has been a beast of a player. His importance in the National team paints a totally different picture as he scored a brace against both Spain and Cyprus.
In the meanwhile, he has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Newcastle United has been monitoring the 26-year-old midfielder and a potential summer move has not been ruled out.
How did McTominay respond?
While in conversation with The Shields Gazette, the midfielder said, “You have to set high expectations for yourself.”
“You can’t just go into games, hoping to do well. You must go on believing. I spoke to the manager [Steve Clarke] and he said, ‘I don’t think you’re playing with a smile on your face, and want to see the smile come back out.
“That was the first day I arrived (with the national squad and thought, do you know what, he is right.
“I felt the smile did need to come back on my face, and needed to start enjoying football and playing like love it.”
