Matt LaFleur gets emotional discussing the Packers’ poor performance in the first half vs. the Lions
After Joe Philbin’s brief tenure as the Green Bay Packers interim head coach, Matt LaFleur takes over in 2019. He’s enjoyed three seasons since then with 13 wins apiece and two visits to the NFC Championship Game. You’re constantly in the hunt when you win that many games.
Because of this, the first-half blowout they suffered against the Detroit Lions during their Week 4 Thursday Night Football game seemed alien to them. They last took a beating like this a very long time ago, particularly at Lambeau Field. It is, therefore, understandable that LaFleur couldn’t contain his annoyance during the intermission.
With Thursday Night Football sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung, the head coach, who is in his sixth season, expressed the following:
“I mean, it’s very humbling, embarrassing right now.”
Thanks to two running touchdowns by David Montgomery and a receiving score by Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Detroit Lions jumped out to a 27-3 lead at the half. The Green Bay Packers, on the other hand, averaged one yard per play in the first half.
Even though the Lions are not blitzing the offensive line, Packers quarterback Jordan Love has been sacked four times in the first half. It was a catastrophic start, especially at home, that the team’s devoted supporters hadn’t witnessed in a while.
Because of this, when Hartung questioned Matt LaFleur about what he said to his team during the halftime meeting, he replied:
“I said, ‘We’ve got to be able to look each other in the eye, man to man, and give it up for one another this whole second half.’ I wanna see this team fight.”
As Love connected with Christian Watson for a touchdown throw in the third quarter, LaFleur’s criticism could have been effective. With Jayden Reed’s successful two-point attempt, the score has changed to 27-11, cutting the margin to 16. Love subsequently made the score 27-17 with a nine-yard touchdown run.
The Packers sought to complete another comeback victory after defeating the New Orleans Saints last week. They trailed 17-0 at the half before scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter to win it. Romeo Doubs’ touchdown reception from Love served as the decisive score.
The Packers finished 8-9 last year and missed the playoffs after three consecutive seasons with 13 wins. Davante Adams was already a member of the Las Vegas Raiders when Aaron Rodgers was still active. With young yet brilliant players surrounding the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player, the Packers offense labored.
Through three games this season, the Packers have a 2-1 record. But if Matt LaFleur has another poor performance, things might become heated. As the season goes on, issues with Green Bay’s offensive line may hurt him. If this campaign gets out of hand, things won’t look good for him.
