Financial support is pouring in for Mary Lou Retton, the Olympic legend, who is facing a serious medical issue. With over $184,000 collected in donations, her battle against a very rare form of pneumonia has received immense backing.

As previously reported, the 55-year-old gold medalist is in the ICU and unable to breathe on her own. What makes this even more challenging is that Mary Lou Retton does not have insurance, which is why her family created a SpotFund page to help cover her growing medical bills. Shortly after the fundraiser went live, it surpassed its initial $50,000 goal.

In fact, this cause has exceeded all expectations, raising over three times the original goal as of Wednesday morning, and it continues to gain momentum.

To date, more than 3,900 individuals have contributed to support Retton’s expenses, along with sharing heartfelt messages for the gymnast and her family.

Mary Lou Retton, a well-known American Olympian from the 1980s, won a gold medal in the all-around event and earned a pair of silver and bronze medals in 1984.
