Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is Germany’s No.1
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will be the first choice for Germany in 2023.
Ter Stegen has been instrumental in Barcelona’s title challenge this season. This season, the German has kept 19 clean sheets in 26 La Liga fixtures. This means he has equalled his best ever season with Blaugrana from 2017-18.
The 30-year-old has been able to renew his status as one of the finest shot stoppers in the world. Despite his great displays in the past, the German has not been able to replace Manuel Neuer as Germany’s number 1. However, with his current run of form, Hansi Flick has put his trust in Ter Stegen to be Germany’s first choice goalkeeper ahead of Euro 2024.
What did Hansi Flick have to say?
The German head coach said, “Marc will play these two games. I’ve always said the performance principle applies.”
“Manuel also knows that and we have lots of quality in the goalkeeper position.
“Marc has shown at Barca, that he’s a fantastic footballer. He dominates the space behind the defence, and is very good with the ball, so it doesn’t make a huge difference of playing him or Manuel.”
Ter Stegen will have his eyes on his first Zamora Trophy by the end of this season. Zamora Trophy is awarded to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in a single La Liga season. The Barcelona keeper might as well break the record for most clean sheet in La Liga history. A record held by Francisco Liano with 26, Marc just needs 7 more clean sheets with 12 games to go in order to equal the tally.
