Big news in Washington! The Commanders, the city’s football team, has been sold to a group led by Josh Harris, who owns the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils. NBA legend, Magic Johnson, is also part of this new ownership team!
Magic Johnson knows all about owning sports teams, and he has hinted that some exciting changes might be on the way for the Washington football team. In an interview with NBC News’ Craig Melvin, Johnson mentioned that the team’s name, “Commanders,” might not stick around for long. The new owners are thinking about exploring a different name!
When asked about the team’s current nickname, Johnson said, “I think everything’s on the table, especially after this year. We’ll see where we are with the name, but I can’t say right now.”

It turns out that many fans weren’t too thrilled when the team announced its new name, “Commanders,” last year. Johnson agreed with a laugh, acknowledging the fans’ feelings.
Here’s a bit of history: For an impressive 82 years, the team had just one nickname. But in 2020 and 2021, they went by the temporary name “Washington Football Team.” Then, the decision was made to become the “Commanders” permanently. However, it seems like the new owners might have different plans.
