Los Angeles Chargers’ Early Offseason Targets In NFL Free Agency

The Los Angeles Chargers‘ 2022 campaign ended in the Wild Card round of the 2023 NFL playoffs after a 31-30 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the loss, the team heads into the off-season with several big decisions to make, including how to approach the head coaching position. With quarterback Justin Herbert entering his fourth NFL season, the team will look to build on their 10-win season and solid foundation to become a legitimate threat once again next season.

One of the key areas the Chargers should address in free agency is the wide receiver position, which was a weak point for the team throughout the season. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams suffered major injuries and were out for extended periods. Williams’ inability to play in the playoffs owing to a back ailment was a major reason for the team’s defeat.

The squad should also consider filling the tight end position. Gerald Everett was the primary option at the position, although there needed to be more productive after him.

If the Chargers want to be competitive again next season, here are three free agents they should pursue:

Parris Campbell, WR

The Los Angeles Chargers could look to add wide receiver Parris Campbell to their roster in the off-season. Campbell played for the Indianapolis Colts and had a solid season in 2022, recording 63 receptions for 623 yards and three touchdowns. 

With Keenan Allen and Mike Williams dealing with injuries this season, the Chargers lacked production at the wide receiver position, and Campbell could be a valuable addition to their offense. He could also be an affordable option for the team, which already has several star players.

Mike Gesicki, TE

In addition, The Los Angeles Chargers could consider adding tight end Mike Gesicki to their roster in the off-season as an addition to the position. Gesicki, who played for the Miami Dolphins, has developed into a legitimate threat at the tight end position over his five NFL seasons. 

He recorded 231 receptions for 2,617 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. With Gerald Everett being the only productive player at the position, Gesicki could add firepower and stretch the field. As he is set to be an unrestricted free agent, the Chargers could be a great landing spot for him.

Allen Lazard, WR

Finally, The Los Angeles Chargers could consider adding Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard to their roster as a way to make a big splash at the position in the off-season. Lazard has developed into a strong option at wide receiver over his five seasons in Green Bay, recording 169 receptions for 2,236 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. 

He has also recorded at least 400 passing yards in each season since 2019 and reached the end zone 14 times in the past two seasons. Joining the established group of Williams and Allen, he could put up big numbers and form a pass-catching trio that could be among the best in the NFL. This could be a great option for the Chargers to surround Justin Herbert with all the weapons they can.

In conclusion, the Chargers have a solid foundation in place, and with the right moves in free agency, they could be a force to be reckoned with next season. The team needs to address the wide receiver and tight end positions in free agency and target players such as Allen Lazard, Mike Gesicki, and Parris Campbell to make the necessary improvements.
