Lionel Messi’s older brother apologizes after commenting on the PSG star’s return to Barcelona

Lionel Messi, the Paris Saint Germain star’s elder brother Matias, apologized for commenting on Messi’s former club Barcelona. He recently made a sarcastic remark about the club and his brother’s contribution to it. 

He wrote on his IG post: 

“I want to apologize for what I said on social media, I was just joking with my son and friends. How can I think that of a club as big as Barcelona, which has given so much to my family and Leo. Catalonia is our second home and that is public knowledge.”

The controversial remark by Matias

Matias commented on the club and said that Barcelona got recognition worldwide because of Messi and that the only globally recognized club was Real Madrid. He also mentioned the club’s president Joan Laporta. He dismissed the PSG star, Messi’s return to Barcelona and said that a lot of ‘cleaning’ should be done to get him including Laporta’s expulsion

Messi spent 20 years with the club and won 35 trophies for it, which includes the Championship League titles. However, he left Barcelona due to financial strains in 2021. He later joined then PSG, but there were talks that he would go back to his former club Barcelona, as he discarded the negotiations of his contract with the club.

Matias’ apology 

While apologizing, Matias highlighted the importance of Barcelona to his family and his brother. He also said that Catalonia is like a second home to them, and it has given a lot to his brother and family. All that he commented about the club was a mere joke, and it did not mean to cause any offense or harm to the club.
