Lionel Messi crowned the world’s best player in 2022
After five times trying to lift the coveted trophy, Lionel Messi finally achieved glory at international level as he won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was pivotal in Argentina’s success, scoring 7 goals and three assists during the tournament. This included a brace in the final which helped Argentina claim their third World Cup trophy.
THE BIGGER PICTURE:
The little boy from Rosario led the Albiceleste and even won the Golden Ball for being the best performer in Qatar. He is the only player to have won the prize twice, earlier winning the same at the 2014 edition in Brazil.
This season, the Argentinian is yet to win a trophy win PSG but his individual stats speak volumes of his significance in Christophe Galtier’s side. He has a total of 33 goal contribution in 28 games for the Parisians, while they lead the Ligue 1 points table.
AND WHAT’S MORE:
Last night’s award was the second such award for Messi since its rebranding in 2016. Earlier in 2009, he won the FIFA World Player of the Year award. This puts him level with Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski, both of them winning the award twice as well while Luka Modric won it once.
WHAT NEXT?
Having won FIFA The Best, Messi will look to win the Ballon d’Or later this year, taking his tally to 8th.
