Kenny Pickett injury updates: Latest on Steelers QB’s knee ailment after loss to Texans
An already difficult day for the Pittsburgh Steelers offense might have become even worse.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s 30-6 defeat to the Houston Texans.
Pickett had to be assisted off the field after being sacked on a fourth-and-1 play by Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard. He was ruled out shortly after and was expected to be replaced in the game on the next drive by backup Mitchell Trubisky. At the time, Pittsburgh was behind 16-6.
Pickett finished the game by completing 15 of 23 passes for 114 yards and an interception. After being the No. 20 overall pick in last year’s NFL draft and taking over for Trubisky in Week 4 of last season, the Pitt graduate is in his second year as the team’s starter.
Here’s the most recent information about his condition:
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that he didn’t have any further information on Pickett’s injury, which he stated needed to be investigated further.
It was still being determined how long it would take to resolve Pickett’s situation. The Steelers face the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens this Sunday before a Week 6 bye.
If Kenny Pickett is ruled out, who will start as quarterback for the Steelers?
If Pickett is unable to play, Trubisky, who completed three of five passes for 18 yards on Sunday, is expected to reclaim the starting job.
Last season, the seventh-year veteran started five games for the Steelers.
The Steelers’ difficulties
Pittsburgh’s offense needs to make big plays or produce consistency, ranking 27th in yards per game (275.7) entering Sunday. The Steelers had only 225 yards and 12 first downs on Sunday.
When asked if he planned to make adjustments after the game, Tomlin replied, “Hell yeah, we’ve got to make some changes, man.” We put out an unattractive product today; therefore, we’re not going to do the same thing again and expect a better result. We’ll prepare a strategy this week to determine what those modifications are.”
