Kansas City Chiefs Showcase Unity with ‘Black National Anthem’ Performance at Season Opener
In a break from the usual, the Kansas City Chiefs put on a unique show before their NFL season opener against the Detroit Lions. Instead of the usual national anthem, they featured a special rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the Black National Anthem, performed by the talented Kansas City Boys and Girls Choir.
Mia Ramsey, who leads the choir, spoke with KCTV in Kansas City. She explained how important this song was during the Civil Rights Movement and why it’s significant to perform it on such a big stage.
“The history that is steeped in it speaks volumes to where we have come, but how far we still have to go,” Ramsey said. “In that time, those that were fighting for freedom, those that were fighting for equality, and just to be recognized as a human would know that we could sing this song and we could have pride in our being.
She added, “As we sing this song, we sing it with pride and we honor our ancestors, we honor those who are present before us, and those who are yet to come.”
The atmosphere is unmatched. It's good to be back.

The Kansas City Boys and Girls Choir is made up of about 14 young people from the Kansas City area. It was founded in 1995 to give young folks from diverse backgrounds a chance to experience the world of arts.
Choosing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for the season opener is a clear sign of the Chiefs’ commitment to recognizing diversity, history, and unity on the NFL stage.
