John McEnroe’s Request For Exhibition Match With Rival Cancels By Wimbledon
The legend John McEnroe’s request for an exhibition match with Bjorn Borg at Centre Court, Wimbledon canceled by the authorities.
Seven-time Grand Slam Champion and BBC Commentator, John McEnroe wanted to play his old rival Bjorn Borg after the Women’s Final on Saturday. McEnroe known for his quick temper and outspoken personality, put the idea of an exhibition match between him and the former world’s no.1 Sweden tennis star Bjorn Borg at the Centre Court, Wimbledon.
64-year-old American tennis legend John’s request was turned down by Wimbledon officials. He was told that Centre Court is only reserved for official matches. Instead, they offered court No. 6, which is the smallest and the least popular court at the venue.
McEnroe didn’t take this personally and decided to make a joke out of it on-air.
When broadcaster Chris Fowler said he was looking forward to the latest episode from the series McEnroe’s Places on ESPN Plus with Mr. Borg re-live the moments. McEnroe said he actually did it right here at Wimbledon. McEnroe replied to Fowler’s question of which court,
“Of course. How about court 6 they said? Not quite the same, But Beggers can’t be choosers.”
John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg’s rivalry is one of the greatest in tennis history. Apart from playing tennis John is BBC’s longtime commentator and he also did a narration for Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever”. John McEnroe said goodbye to his tennis career in 2006.
