Joan Laporta is confident to bring Super League by 2025
It is no secret that Barcelona president Joan Laporta pulled all strings possible to back the Super League. Now, despite the legalities, Laporta has claimed that the Super League will commence by 2025.
The initial idea of the Super League was introduced by Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez. Soon after, clubs like Barcelona and Juventus tagged along. The association rivaled FIFA and UEFA for working with unfair monopolies.
After a lengthy trial, the European Court of Justice announced that policies set by FIFA and UEFA were not breaking any EU laws. Following the ruling, FIFA banned the coalition from playing in tournaments other than those organized by FIFA or UEFA. In the meanwhile, they even threatened the clubs to be kicked out of their domestic leagues.
While speaking to Cadena SER, Joan Laporta predicts the Super League commence in 2025. “I think there will be a Super League. In March we will have the ruling of the EU Court of Justice. Yesterday was an opinion of the judge, the full sentence is not coming until next spring.”
Laporta was adamant that even FIFA and UEFA were siding with their initiative to rival their Premier League counterparts. The Blaugrana president looked quite optimistic regarding the idea of competing in the Super League in the future.
Which clubs are still backing the Super League?
Initially, there were 12 members in the coalition supporting the new competition, including the Premier League’s ‘big six.’ However, currently, it is just the trio of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Juventus who are in favor of the idea. Despite not being the majority, the coalition is confident of pulling through the deal by the time, the EU delivers its verdict.
What is the European Super League?
The Super League is a commercial foundation, formed to compete with the UEFA Champions League. The tournament promises to bring in revenue much more than that of UEFA prize money. However, it faced backlash for its format for showing partiality towards the so-called ‘big clubs’ by reserving them a spot each year. Eventually, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
