Jeff Teague recalls Jimmy Butler referring to Karl Anthony-Towns as ‘special’ before altering his opinion four games later
Even though he was surrounded by brilliance, Jimmy Butler’s stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves was not without turbulence. With Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins in the mix, the team moved for Butler in the hopes that he would lead them to the playoffs. However, according to Jeff Teague, who shared the Miami Heat’s locker room with the forward and KAT, the Miami Heat superstar knew things weren’t going to work out.
Towns was picked as the first overall choice in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Two seasons later, he was joined by Jimmy Butler, who first thought the former was remarkable before swiftly changing his opinion.
“KAT is one of the coldest dudes I have seen play basketball,” Teague went on to say. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him… this dude can do everything.” We actually talked, like myself and Jimmy [Butler], and Jimmy said, ‘That Mr. Special.’ ‘Fk, this s*t ain’t gonna work,’ Jimmy stated of game 4. I assumed they were something else, but they aren’t.”
The Timberwolves made the playoffs that season but were eliminated in the first round by the Houston Rockets.
Jimmy Butler requested a trade the next season when his connection with the other players soured. According to a Fox Sports story, the now-Miami Heat superstar was dissatisfied with the attitudes of his teammates and wanted to pursue other opportunities.
He averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in his lone full season with the Wolves.
Jimmy Butler spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers before joining the Miami Heat.
The Chicago Bulls chose the six-time NBA All-Star with the 30th overall choice in the 2011 NBA Draft. The forward was seen as an important cog in the Bulls’ championship run. However, after he reached the age of majority, the franchise’s performance plummeted.
With the Bulls in the process of rebuilding, he was sent to Minnesota, where he spent a season before being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers. While there was potential for him to reunite with Joel Embiid, he clashed with then-Sixers coach Brett Brown and the big man, who wasn’t interested in sharing the ball.
