Iga Swiatek reviews her 2023 season
Iga Swiatek had a fantastic season in 2023, winning a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and the WTA Finals and finishing the year as the World No. 1.
Swiatek’s quick ascension to the top of the game was remarkable. She astonished the world by winning the French Open without dropping a set in 2020, becoming the first Polish player to do it.
The Pole then went on to win the 2022 Roland Garros and US Open, when she defeated Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur in the finals, respectively. She also won six more tournaments that year, including the Indian Wells and Miami Open, and rose to No. 1 for the first time in her career.
Being at the top, however, came with a lot of expectations and scrutiny. Swiatek said that the strain of defending her points and titles caused her to lose motivation at times. Swiatek claimed in an interview with puntodebreak.com that she began the 2023 season with a defensive approach.
“That was a trying time.” “When the season started, everyone was wondering how I would play after such a successful year, so I felt that any result other than winning the tournament would be insufficient,” the Pole explained.
“Rather than wanting to win, I hoped not to lose.” It wasn’t anything beneficial; I approached the happenings in the Middle East differently,” she remarked.
Swiatek won her first championship of the season in Doha, defeating Jessica Pegula in the final, 6-3, 6-0. In Stuttgart, she successfully defended her title by defeating World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The 22-year-old then successfully defended her French Open title, defeating Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the finals. She also won the WTA 250 tournament in her home country, defeating Laura Siegemund 6-0, 6-1 in the final.
The Beijing Open was won by Iga Swiatek, who defeated Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. She won the WTA Finals in Cancun three weeks later, dominating the court and winning the trophy without dropping a set.
Marketa Vondrousova, Jabeur, and Gauff defeated her in the group stage, Sabalenka in the semifinals, and Pegula in the final. She also recaptured the top spot from Sabalenka.
