Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula reach Toray Pan Pacific Open quarters
Top-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open after coming back from breaks down in both sets.
In her first performance in Japan, Swiatek reached her 13th quarterfinal of 2023. The eighth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova will be her next opponent.
Jessica Pegula, the second-seeded player, started stronger, defeating Cristina Busca 6-1, 6-2.
Pegula stated, “I thought I played very well” on the court. I was only trying to concentrate on my serve and my return because the courts play rather quickly here. I accomplished that really well because I was able to play a very clean set today.
Ekaterina Alexandrova upset reigning champion Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-2, while Kudermetova defeated Kayla Day 6-3, 6-3.
Ons Jabeur, the top seed in the Ningbo Open, and Petra Kvitova, the second seed, both made it to the quarterfinals.
While Kvitova advanced with a walkover after Yulia Putintseva withdrew, Jabeur defeated Tamara Korpatsch 6-3, 6-2. After defeating Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-2, Diana Shnaider, a two-time Wimbledon winner, will play her.
Additionally, Vera Zvonareva, a Russian wild card and two-time Grand Slam finalist, defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 7-5, Linda Fruhvirtova defeated fourth-seeded Anna Blinkova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, and Katerina Siniakova defeated Sorana Cirstea. Vera Zvonareva also defeated Sorana Cirstea.
At the Astana Open, Laslo Djere, the seventh-seeded player, was defeated by Hamad Medjedovic after quitting the match with a 6-3, 2-1 deficit.
