ICC Addresses DRS Controversy After South Africa vs. Pakistan Match

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said that the first ball-tracking image shown during Rassie van der Dussen’s DRS review in the second innings of the South Africa-Pakistan ODI was wrong and incomplete.

During the ninth over of the innings, Rassie van der Dussen was given out LBW (Leg Before Wicket) on the field, with the ball hitting him on the knee roll as he tried to play it. He decided to challenge this decision, and the third umpire examined the ball’s path using ball-tracking technology after seeing that Ultra-Edge had shown a flat line.

However, there was a brief moment when an incomplete ball-tracking image appeared, showing the impact as ‘umpire’s call’ and the wickets as ‘missing.’ It was quickly taken down, and the cameras showed the Pakistani players on the field. Then, the ball-tracking was shown again from the beginning, and this time it showed ‘umpire’s call’ for both impact and hitting. The on-field decision stood, and Rassie van der Dussen had to leave the field. This moment caused a lot of confusion and led to speculation on the internet.

An ICC spokesperson explained, “In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, there was a mistake in the graphic shown during Rassie van der Dussen’s LBW review. The correct graphic with the right details was eventually displayed.”

The Decision Review System (DRS) has been a topic of discussion in this tournament, with several on-field decisions being overturned, including those involving Australian players Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis in Lucknow against South Africa. More recently, David Warner was unhappy when DRS couldn’t change an on-field LBW decision against him.

Despite the emotions and DRS controversy, South Africa won a close match by just one wicket. They were on their way to victory when Aiden Markram, their top scorer, was dismissed in the 41st over. Gerald Coetezee also got out in the next over, leaving them in a difficult situation. With only 21 runs needed and three wickets in hand, Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi held their nerve. Although Lungi Ngidi was dismissed in a spectacular catch by Haris Rauf, Keshav Maharaj, along with Tabraiz Shamsi, managed to secure the win in the 48th over.
