“I was pretty upset that he was talking,” Xander Schauffele says of his father’s involvement in the Ryder Cup incident.
Xander Schauffele came under scrutiny when his father spoke to the media about the debate over whether Ryder Cup players should be paid. His father stated that the 30-year-old golfer was almost kicked off the US team for failing to complete the player benefit agreement on time.
However, until lately, the Olympic gold champion stayed deafeningly mute on the subject. He spoke to Today’s Golfer about his unhappiness with his father talking to and releasing information to the media. He underlined that the contract had arrived late and that they needed to make a few legal changes.
According to Golf Monthly, Xander Shauffele stated,
“I was irritated that he was speaking to the media. We’ve already worked everything out. That wasn’t necessary to say. There was some initial misunderstanding, but it came late, and we just wanted to tweak a few things legally in the framework before we signed it (the contract).”
Xander Shauffele noted that his spot on the United States Ryder Cup squad was “at no point” jeopardized.
He also addressed the speculations that circulated during the 44th edition of the famed biannual event in Rome. According to reports, the US locker room was divided into two halves, one of which comprised Patrick Cantlay and Olympic medalist Schauffele.
The 30-year-old American clarified that the allegations were completely incorrect and that the entire squad was together. He went on to say that the whole US team locker room scoffed at the rumors.
“I have no idea how or why any of that was printed.” To set the record straight, there was absolutely no fracture in our team room. It was really amusing that we didn’t eat with our teammates. “That part made everyone in our locker room laugh pretty hard,” Shauffele added.
