“I think he’ll be very proud of me,” Matthieu Pavon said after winning the Spanish Open for the first time
Matthieu Pavon had a stunning breakthrough this year, dramatically winning the 2023 Spanish Open. The French golfer was an obvious underdog in a field that included notable players like Jon Rahm. He did, however, provide an emotional triumph.
Pavon finished with a 4-stroke advantage over second-placed Zander Lombard. In the same nation where his father used to play professional soccer, he finished with a 7-under 64. The triumph meant a lot to Matthieu Pavon, who had always wanted to win in Spain because of his family’s relationship with it.
Pavon’s grandfather lived in Spain, and his father played professional soccer there. He was also the runner-up last year, falling to Jon Rahm in the final round. Following his triumph, the French golfer became emotional and offered a beautiful interview.
“He is up there, so I think he will be very proud of me,” he remarked.
Matthieu Pavon has been added through ESPN:
“A piece of my heart is in Spain.” My grandpa was from here, but he resided in France due to [previous dictator Gen. Francisco] Franco, and I just really thought about him on the course today. It was really difficult to hold the emotions within, but now I can just let them go a little bit.”
After a lengthy layoff, Matthieu Pavon won the Spanish Open
The Spanish Open is a well-known tournament on the DP World Tour. Matthieu Pavon is now ranked 42nd on the DP World Tour, yet he performed like a champion at the Spanish Open. Since turning professional seven years ago, the 30-year-old has dreamed of winning in Spain.
Pavon maintained his composure throughout the event and played with a genuine desire to win. The French golfer admitted to controlling his emotions over the event’s closing days. Fortunately, everything worked out in the end, as he triumphed against difficult opposition from Jon Rahm, Zander Lombard, and Nathan Kimsey.
“It was a very long wait.”
Pavon went on to say:
“That was a long wait after seven years on tour.” But it was well worth it. Managing my emotions over the previous two days was a huge achievement for me.”
Matthieu Pavon won his first DP World Tour event after winning the Spanish Open, and he finished the week on a high note.
