How Much Will Saints have to expend if They want to release Derek Carr in 2024
Derek Carr’s performance for the Saints has been a letdown for the team. Not only his performance is worse than expected, but his behavior on the field has also become an issue of concern, especially considering he’s supposed to be a team leader.
This season, Carr has completed 63.9 percent of his passes, gaining 1,600 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions. Surprisingly, Andy Dalton, who is considered less talented, performed better for the Saints in 2022.
To make things worse for New Orleans, it seems they’re stuck with Carr for at least one more season. They signed Carr to a hefty four-year, $150 million contract in the last offseason, with $60 million guaranteed at the start.

If the Saints release Carr before June 1, they’d face a substantial $52.8 million cap charge. A trade would still cost them $22.8 million, although finding another team willing to trade for him seems unlikely.
Regardless of what the Saints decide to do next year, Carr is guaranteed $30 million. If he remains on the team by March, another $10 million will be guaranteed.
The most probable outcome is that Carr will be released after the 2024 season, resulting in a more manageable $17.1 million in dead money for the Saints. Of course, if Carr improves his performance, this discussion might become irrelevant. But as long as he continues to struggle, his contract will remain a significant concern in New Orleans.
