Harry Kane is excited for England duty amid Rooney record

The international break is back with Gareth Southgate claiming that England captain Harry Kane is going in with “added motivation” especially after the penalty miss against France at the World Cup.

As of today, the English striker has equalled Wayne Rooney at 53 goals to be England’s all-time leading goal scorer. Hopefully, Kane will be able to break the record against Italy in the European qualifiers.

If not for the missed penalty, Kane would have already broken the record. The Englishman said the moment will stay with him throughout his life, however, it will not at all impact his form. Since club football resumed post World Cup, he has scored 10 goals for Spurs.

What did Kane have to say?

“We’ve seen that mentality with his performances with his club, he’s put it behind him, but he’ll have added motivation tomorrow night to come back and show everybody what he’s about in an England shirt. For us, that’s a good position,” Southgate said.

Asked where Kane ranked in the pantheon of great England strikers, Southgate added: “That’s always difficult to compare across ages. There are a lot I didn’t see because I wasn’t alive. Because of his goal-scoring record alone it puts him in the upper echelons of the group. He provides so much more to the group that that. Quality of passing, vision, touch. He’s an outstanding player and we’re lucky to have him.”
