Graeme McDowell joins Smash GC for the LIV Golf 2024 season
After finishing the season in the Open Zone, Graeme McDowell is expected to join the Brooks Koepka-led Smash GC for the next LIV Golf season.
During the current LIV Golf season, McDowell has struggled. He has yet to finish in the top 10 and has only finished as high as 12th at Bedminster. He entered the open zone and finished the season ranked 42nd.
For those who are unaware, players in the Open Zone (No. 25–44) can choose to be traded to a different team or have their present contract extended. To place in the top three at the LIV Golf Promotions tournament the following month is the third and last possibility.
Martin Kaymer, the captain of Cleeks GC, did not keep the 2010 US Open champion, and he was in danger of not returning for the next season. But Koepka has given him a fresh start and some respite for a minimum of another year. Smash GC had one vacant slot after Chase Koepka concluded the season in a drop zone, which means that he can only rejoin the league by finishing in the top 3 at the Abu Dhabi event next month.
Brooks Koepka, the captain of Smash GC, is now joined by McDowell, Matt Wolff, and Jason Kokrak. Kokrak is nearly guaranteed to return for the upcoming season, but following their altercation this year, the five-time major winner is likely trying to replace Wolff.
Following McDowell’s transfer and Bernd Wiesberger’s return to the DP World Tour, Cleeks also has two slots available. After making mediocre results in his first two seasons on LIV Golf, Wiesberger decided to return to his home circuit. The European Tour approved his membership application last week.
