Giants Sign Former World Series Champion to Minor-League Deal
The San Francisco Giants made a move to bolster their pitching depth, signing former World Series champion Joe Ross to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league camp. The 29-year-old right-hander spent his entire career with the Washington Nationals and was born and raised in Berkeley, California, making his signing with the Giants a homecoming.
Joe Ross has posted a career ERA of 4.26 and a bWAR of 4.9, with a lifetime record of 26-28, 403 strikeouts, and 141 walks. He had his best season in 2016, recording an ERA+ of 125 in 105 innings pitched with 93 strikeouts and 29 walks. While Ross did not have his best season in 2022, posting an ERA of 4.17 through 108 innings, the Giants are taking a chance on the 29-year-old with the minor-league deal.
The right-hander was part of the Washington Nationals‘ World Series-winning team in 2019, defeating the Houston Astros. Although Ross had a rough start in Game 5 of the World Series, he was part of the team’s revenge in Game 7. With his World Series experience and potential for improvement, the Giants hope Ross will be a valuable addition to their pitching staff.
The minor-league deal for Ross is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Giants as they look to build a strong pitching rotation for the upcoming season. With his experience and potential, the former World Series champion may be the missing piece the Giants need to make a run at the title.
