Former university star Ben Shelton reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Australian Open
A 20-year-old star from the University of Florida Ben Shelton has reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, just in his second Grand Slam participation.
He has performed remarkably by now and therefore to say that his first trip outside the country was of success would be an understatement.
It was the first time when he left Australia, and a month later, the 20-year-old is performing like a seasoned pro, and his Australian Open debut quarterfinal run was boosted by his win over J.J. Wolf.
Shelton acknowledged that his performance in Melbourne has exceeded all expectations after his five-set victory on Monday.
“[It is] definitely a surprise,” Shelton said. “I got on the plane with no expectations. I know that it’s very hard to adjust to Australia from the United States just with the jetlag, time change and everything. It being my first time, never being out of the United States, I knew it would be a struggle.”
“But I think it has helped me a little bit having that expectation or the feeling that I have to perform, but being able to just go out there, be myself and play free. I think that’s been a big contribution to my success.”
