Former Buccaneers Safety Mike Edwards Signs with Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a talented safety who has been making headlines for his impressive play on the field. Mike Edwards, a former member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million with the Chiefs.
During his time in Tampa, Edwards showed that he was a starting-caliber safety, despite not getting the opportunity to start until the final year of his rookie contract. He proved to be a valuable member of the Bucs’ impressive 2019 draft class, along with Devin White, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Jamel Dean.
While Edwards wasn’t prioritized by the Bucs in free agency, the Chiefs recognized his potential and signed him to provide valuable depth to their secondary. Edwards has generated seven interceptions over the past three seasons, despite serving as part of a rotation in Tampa.
Although the Buccaneers would have liked to bring Edwards back, they are operating under a major cap crunch this offseason and need to be frugal with their spending. The team has already locked up the talented tandem of Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean on the outside, and Antoine Winfield Jr. is due for a new contract in 2024.
But for now, the Chiefs have added an exciting new piece to their defense with the signing of Mike Edwards. Fans will no doubt be looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team as they look to make a strong push for the playoffs this season.
