FIFA Introduces Special Armbands for Women’s World Cup Instead of Rainbow Armbands

As we get closer to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, there’s been some talk about the rainbow armband issue that caused tension during the last World Cup in Qatar.

According to ESPN, FIFA has decided not to allow players to wear the usual rainbow-colored armband, which represents LGBTQ+ pride, this time around. Instead, they’ve come up with a different idea. They’ll offer eight special armbands, each in a different color, to players. Each armband will represent a specific cause supported by the United Nations.

FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, said that this change will let players highlight many important issues in our society. These causes include things like fairness, equality between genders, peace, ending hunger, education, and stopping domestic violence.

Here is the released statement of Gianni Infantino:

“[Football] can shine the spotlight on very important causes in our society. After some very open talks with stakeholders, including member associations and players, we have decided to highlight a series of social causes — from inclusion to gender equality, from peace to ending hunger, from education to tackling domestic violence — during all 64 matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

The armbands will have a heart in the middle and look different from the rainbow armband.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is set to start on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand. Fans are excited not only for the thrilling matches but also to see how football can help bring attention to important social causes worldwide.
