Fans respond to Rory McIlroy’s commitment to the first Dubai Invitational.

Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has agreed to compete in the first Dubai Invitational. McIlroy will compete in the new DP World Tour event, which will take place from January 11 to January 14 at Dubai Creek Resort.

Rory McIlroy competes mostly on the PGA Tour. He has only competed in three DP World Tour tournaments this year, but he will return to defend his Hero Dubai Desert Classic title in January 2024.

NUCLR Golf just announced McIlroy’s upcoming tournament on its X account with the caption:

“Rory McIlroy has committed to the inaugural Dubai Invitational, a new DP World Tour event set to take place at Dubai Creek Resort from January 11-14th.” The next week, Jan 18-21, he will defend his title at The Hero Dubai Desert Classic.”

Fans went to the comments section to express their outrage that he would accept money from Arabs. One user stated:

“How dare he take that Arab money….”

Here are more angry fans’ reactions:

Rory McIlroy has been a staunch backer of the PGA Tour in its fight against the LIV Golf. He openly chastised players who joined LIV for financial gain, which the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund supports.

McIlroy stated during the first round of the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open that he would rather retire than participate in the LIV Golf tour. According to McIlroy (via SI):

“I would retire if LIV Golf was the last place on the planet to play golf.” That’s exactly how I feel about it. I’m content as long as I can play golf. At the moment, there is a lot of indifference regarding everything.

“There wasn’t much new information for me in there.” Other folks were going to get some fresh knowledge. As I previously stated, I’ve been dangerously close in the last year and a half. “It’s great to be able to try to distance myself a little,” he continued.

However, he is looking forward to competing in the Dubai Invitational and issued the following statement:

“I’m really looking forward to starting my year at the Dubai Invitational.” I’ve always liked returning to Dubai to start my season, and with a pro-am format, this event will be a fun week.”
