Former world number one Naomi Osaka announced on Wednesday that she is expecting a child and would take a break from tennis until 2024.

Naomi Osaka’s Withdrawl From Australian Open 2023

Osaka withdrew from the Australian Open which takes place at Melbourne Park, from 16–29 January 2023, after not participating in a competitive match since September. Along with two U.S. Open titles, she has won that competition twice. Osaka missed the 2021 French Open and later said that she has been dealing with depression and anxiety for several years. The Japanese great, who was the top-ranked player in the world in 2019, grew up in the US and is presently rated 47th worldwide.

It wasn’t until Wednesday that Osaka’s absence’s cause was made public.

Osaka’s heartfelt message

Osaka posted the information on social media on Wednesday along with a message in both Japanese and English, accompanied by a picture of a pregnancy scan.

“I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch my matches and tell someone, ‘That’s my mom’ haha,” she wrote on Twitter.

She also wrote: “I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,”

When was she last seen?

She made her most recent appearance at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in September. The hometown favorite withdrew from the tournament before her second-round match, complaining of abdominal pain. She told reporters at that competition that she had “learned a lot” about herself and experienced “more down than up” experiences in 2022. She first reached the peak in 2019 and is currently rated 47 on the globe.

Tennis supporters expressed their surprise and delight at the unexpectedly wonderful news. After she withdrew from the season’s opening Grand Slam, many fans remembered the unjust treatment she received.
