Ex-Football Star Johnny Manziel Reveals his “Suicide” Plan After Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder in Netflix Documentary
Johnny Manziel, the talented college football quarterback who wowed the world and won the prestigious Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M, recently got candid about a tough phase in his life. In a heartfelt documentary on Netflix, he shared that after his NFL dreams didn’t pan out, he faced a hidden battle with bipolar disorder.
Back in 2012, Manziel had an amazing season in college football, which led to him getting drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the 22nd overall pick in the NFL. However, his pro football career didn’t go as planned, and he encountered numerous challenges both on and off the field.
In the years that followed, Manziel earned a reputation for being a party animal and struggling to leave behind his college lifestyle. But as we now learn from the documentary, there was more to his story than just late-night revelries.
During a candid interview, Manziel admitted that he turned to partying as a way to cope with some deeper issues he was facing, which eventually led him to a dark place. He bravely revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health condition that left him feeling overwhelmed and lost.
Opening up about his struggles, Manziel shared, “I got diagnosed as bipolar and I felt like it was the same as being called an alcoholic or a drug addict.”
The weight of the diagnosis was heavy, and at one point, he even had plans to spend all his money recklessly before considering ending his life.
He said, “I think I was just running from problems…I had planned to do everything that I wanted to do at that point in my life. Spend as much money as I possibly could and then my plan was to take my life.”
Thankfully, Manziel reached out for help and started his journey toward healing and recovery. With therapy and the unwavering support of his loved ones, he found the strength to confront his inner demons and embrace his bipolar disorder as a part of his unique life path.
