Even if Jones defeats Gane, Makhachev believes that he is the greatest pound-for-pound
At UFC 285, when Jon Jones challenges Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight championship, he will finally make his heavyweight debut. and Jones is anticipating his fight with Ciryl Gane because, in the opinion of UFC president Dana White, if Jones wins that fight, his status as the “GOAT” will be beyond dispute. In his recent media conference white stated “If he can come in and beat Ciryl Gane, I said this when I talked to you guys last time. Nobody can deny that Jon Jones is the greatest of all time.”

However, Islam Makhachev has different opinions on the matter. After his victory over Alexander Volkanovski in his recent interview Makhachev stated “Doesn’t matter how I won today. Now, I’m not just the champion, I’m the best fighter in the world,” he added “I’m very happy. Now people are going to call me not just champ, but the best fighter in the world. This is my dream. It doesn’t matter how I won. I’m very happy. … Now, I’m the best fighter and champion.”
Additionally, he said “I didn’t say that, I know in my mind, when the fight was finished, I know minimum I won three rounds. I didn’t say I lost nothing.” He continued “Jon Jones is a great fighter, he is the best, but last time he won a split decision, he always has a hard fight. I don’t know, I don’t think after this fight he’s going to be the best, because why am I the best right now? Because I beat the best fighter in the world. That’s why I think I deserve this more and if somebody wants to be the best, I am ready.”
