ESPN Reveals Top Heisman Trophy Contender for Week 5
As we wrap up the first month of the 2023 college football season, ESPN is here with its 2023 Heisman Tracker, giving us an early look at who might win this year’s Heisman Trophy, one of the biggest awards in college football.
Surprisingly, USC’s Caleb Williams isn’t the clear favorite according to ESPN. Instead, they’re putting their money on Michael Penix Jr., a quarterback from Washington, who plays in the Pac-12 conference.
Now, let’s break down why Penix is in the spotlight. He used to play for Indiana (the Hoosiers), but now he’s leading Washington’s team, the Huskies. So far, they’ve played four games, and they’ve won all of them, and they weren’t even close games.

Penix isn’t running the ball much, but he doesn’t need to. He’s been doing an incredible job throwing it. He’s thrown for 1,636 yards and has scored 15 touchdowns already. To put that into perspective, he’s doing better than last year when he threw for 4,641 yards and scored 31 touchdowns in the entire season. Plus, he’s only been sacked once, which is pretty impressive.
What makes this even more interesting is that not a lot of people have seen him play yet. Sure, his first game was on ABC against Boise State, and he threw five touchdowns, which is amazing. But after that, his next three games were on less popular networks or streaming platforms, and some were really late at night.
However, things are about to change. As we move further into the season, more folks will get to watch him play, especially on November 4th when Washington takes on Caleb Williams and USC.

Penix has kicked off the 2023 season in an incredible way. Now, we’ll have to see if he can keep it up as he faces some tough teams in the coming weeks, including Oregon, USC, Utah, Oregon State, and Washington State.
