England and New Zealand Face Off in ICC Cricket World Cup Opener
In cricket, it’s quite unusual to decide a winner by counting boundaries. Usually, this happens in casual street games, not in important matches like the World Cup final. But imagine the frustration of going through this in a crucial game after playing hard for more than 100 overs! New Zealand experienced this heartbreak not just once, but twice, in just 30 minutes. Those memories are still painful for them.
Now, in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand, who were unlucky runners-up in 2019, and the current champions, England, will face off in what can be called a grudge match. The game will mark the beginning of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
England, known for their aggressive batting style, have been doing well recently, winning seven out of their last ten limited-over games. Despite this, they enter the World Cup as the fifth-ranked ODI team. Their main challenge is dealing with the absence of their star player, Jason Roy, who won’t be playing in the opening match. Tom Latham will be leading New Zealand in the absence of their regular captain, Kane Williamson, who is recovering from an injury.
Both teams have their strategies. New Zealand’s bowlers Southee and Boult will aim to take early wickets, especially against England’s strong batting lineup. Mitchell Santner’s spin could be a game-changer if the pitch supports spinners. On the other side, England has spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, ready to take advantage of the conditions. Their batting order will rely on players like Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and captain Jos Buttler.
A special focus will be on Ben Stokes, the hero of the 2019 World Cup, who came out of retirement to play in this tournament. Everyone hopes he brings the luck England needs to succeed, just like he did four years ago. All eyes will be on these players as the tournament kicks off.
