Elena Rybakina defeats Bianca Andreescu in the Dubai WTA tournament
The Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships witnessed a stunning first-round match as former Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Bianca Andreescu of Canada faced each other. The ninth-seeded Rybakina defeated Andreescu 6-3, 6-4 with a dominating performance on Monday.
Rybakina’s Magnificent Display:
Rybakina, the current Wimbledon champion, utilized her superb service to secure a comfortable win over her opponent. She finished the game with six aces, winning 11 out of 14 points on Andreescu’s second serve. The Kazakh player took the first set in just 38 minutes, but Andreescu mounted a comeback to take a 3-1 lead in the second set. However, the Canadian couldn’t hold on to the lead, losing three consecutive service games to concede the match to Rybakina.

Other noteworthy players who won their opening matches in straight sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships include Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, and Romania’s Sorana Cirstea. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina upset 10th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia. At the same time, Romania’s Ana Bogdan, the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova and Karolina Pliskova, the United States Lauren Davis and Shelby Rogers, and Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich also won their opening matches.
Upsets in Merida:
In a first-round match at Merida, Mexico, the United States Caty McNally shocked third-seeded Lin Zhu of China, winning 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-1. The match was characterized by 15 service breaks, nine on Zhu’s serve. However, the Chinese player Xiyu Wang eliminated eighth-seeded Alison Riske-Amritraj 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (1).
