Elden Ring Runes are inspired by slices of Erdtree
If you’ve been playing Elden Ring, you’re well aware of how important runes are in the game. They serve as the universal currency accepted by all merchants and can be used to level up at Sites of Grace. But have you ever wondered what they actually are? Reddit user freetrolley42 may have just solved the mystery.
The Erdtree Theory
According to freetrolley42, runes are simply slices of wood from the Erdtree. The user provided comparison images, including an MRI of a tree trunk and the Hero’s Rune, which look strikingly similar. It’s possible that the smaller Golden Runes are slices of Erdtree branches, while Numen’s, Hero’s, and Lord’s Runes are slices taken from various points along the trunk.
The Eye Theory
Not everyone agrees with the Erdtree theory. Some players believe that runes are associated with eyes, pointing to the fact that enemies can spawn with glowing golden eyes that grant extra runes when slain. Additionally, many of the game’s NPCs have eye colors that reflect their allegiance to certain gods.
No Definitive Answer
While both theories have their merits, there’s no definitive description of runes in Elden Ring. FromSoftware has yet to offer an explanation, leaving players to speculate and debate. Perhaps the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will provide more clues.
Whether you’re a believer in the Erdtree theory or the eye theory, there’s no denying that runes are a vital part of the Elden Ring experience. They serve as both currency and a means of leveling up, making them a precious commodity. As you continue to explore the Lands Between, keep your eyes peeled for more clues about these mysterious artifacts.
