Djokovic-Sinner ATP Finals title clash creates history
Novak Djokovic’s 2023 ATP finals title match vs Jannik Sinner was the most-watched tennis match in Italy.
On Sunday, November 19, more than six million fans (on RAI 1 and Sky Sports combined) tuned in to see the summit showdown of one of the ATP Tournaments’ largest tournaments.
Novak Djokovic defeated home favorite Jannik Sinner in the year-end tournament final to win a record eighth ATP Finals title. The Serb broke Roger Federer’s record of six Grand Slam championships, which he previously shared with him.
Djokovic looked unbeatable as he dispatched the Italian ace 6-3, 6-3 in front of a loud Italian crowd in Turin. By doing so, the Serb avenged his three-set setback to the fourth seed earlier this week in the round-robin encounter.
The World No. 1 demonstrated his superiority early away, completing a virtually perfect opening set against Sinner on Sunday, missing only a handful of games on serve.
The Serb began the second set by breaking Sinner in his first service game and marched on to win, terrifying the 22-year-old while displaying superb tennis.
Despite the crowd’s backing for Sinner, his double fault ended the match, delivering the victory to Djokovic, who had his foot on the gas from the start.
“Winning the Olympic Games is definitely one of the major goals for next year,” says Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic declared in a news conference following his victory over Jannik Sinner that, along with the Grand Slams, he aims to win a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He did, however, underline the tight timetable and frequent change of turf for the 2024 season.
“Aside from Grand Slams, it is definitely one of the major goals for next year.” It’ll be a highly crowded schedule, moving from the slowest to the quickest surface in sport and back to the slowest—clay, grass, clay, and finally, hard court. “Obviously, that’s a very demanding, challenging time of year,” he explained.
Djokovic also stated that he and his squad would organize everything ahead of time in order to peak at the right moment next year.
“I’m going to have to speak with my team to see how we can plan out our preparations and training so that I’m able to play my best tennis where I want to,” he said.
