DANIELLE COLLINS “embarrassed” after celebrating too early in a 10-point tie-break against Karolina Muchova
American tennis player Danielle Collins admits she was “a little embarrassed” when she prematurely celebrated a third-set tie-break victory over Karolina Muchova in the second round.
What happened in the AO?
The 2022 Australian Open finalist believed she had won the match when she reached match point against Czech Karolina Muchova and dropped her racket, threw her arms up, and made a “praying hands” gesture.
Muchova gave Collins a 7-3 lead and dropped her racquet in joy, but the super tie-break needed her to clinch 10 or more points with a two-point lead, which was a position she had never played before.
After experiencing her moment, the finalist for the 2022 Australian Open realized something wasn’t right and asked the chair umpire for clarity.
Collins would have been right in a typical tie-break.
The 29-year-old charmingly made fun of herself and then resumed the match, winning it in the end.
“At least she can laugh about it,” a commentator remarked.
“Well you’re going to have to laugh about it; it’s too serious a moment, isn’t it?” another added further.
Collins, who fell to Ash Barty in the grand final of the previous year, lost the opening set to Muchova 6-7 (1-7) before winning it 6-2.
She took the situation light-heartedly
Collins kept up her lighthearted attitude after the game, admitting that she felt self-conscious at the time.
In the end, Collins won by scores of 6-7 (1), 6-2, and 7-6 (6) after a lengthy two hours and 54 minutes.
“I was a little embarrassed… I guess I just never had to play a tiebreak in the third set in a grand slam, so I just really thought the match was over,” she said smiling.
She further added: “I was really feeling a little embarrassed so I just told myself at least you didn’t face plant or something on the floor’, I don’t know, I was just trying to keep things in perspective.”
“I’m not good with the score either, sometimes I forget so I gotta work on that maybe a little bit.”
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, the No. 22 seed, awaits Collins in the third round.
Given that the American faced Australian Ash Barty in the Australian Open final of 2022, you may recognize the name of the player.
With her 6-3 7-6 (7-2) triumph, Barty became the first local woman to win the singles title in 44 years.
