Daniel Snyder Paid Himself $10 million Salary For Years: Reports
Washington Commanders majority owner, Daniel Snyder, has been found to have paid himself a salary of $10 million from team funds, which is highly uncommon for NFL bosses, as per the report from Front Office Sports released on Friday. This latest revelation by Mary Jo White, who is overseeing the NFL’s new investigation into the team, is just one of many questionable financial decisions made by Snyder that have come to light in recent months. While it’s not against league rules for an owner to pay themselves, it’s reportedly rare for NFL bosses to do so, and many other owners reportedly don’t.
Snyder had been under scrutiny for possible bank fraud over an unapproved $450 million loan, and now, his decision to pay himself from team funds is also under investigation. White is reportedly looking into whether any loans, including the $450 million approved by the NFL in 2021 that allowed Snyder to buy out three co-owners, were used improperly.
Last year, Snyder reportedly gave himself a “substantial” pay increase, despite choosing to forego the salary during the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds are now under scrutiny following the possible bank fraud, as investigations into the organization’s abhorrent history of sexual misconduct and financial improprieties continue.
Pressure from fans and the industry for Snyder to sell his control of the team led to his decision to put his shares of the team up for sale late last year. The process to sell the Washington Commanders is reportedly close to being finalized, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is still believed to be a top contender to pay a record-breaking amount for the storied NFL franchise.
The Washington Commanders’ record for 2022 was 8-8-1, and they finished last in the NFC East. With the ongoing investigations and controversies surrounding the team, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the organization.
