Dale Earnhardt Jr. Almost Joined a Rival NASCAR Team
Dale Earnhardt Jr., the famous NASCAR driver, recently shared an interesting tidbit about his career. It turns out that at one point, he came very close to signing with Joe Gibbs Racing, a team that was a competitor to the team he eventually chose.
This happened after the 2007 NASCAR Cup Series season when Earnhardt Jr. decided to leave the team his father had started, called Dale Earnhardt Inc. He had two attractive offers on the table: one from Joe Gibbs Racing and the other from Hendrick Motorsports. In the end, he decided to go with Hendrick Motorsports, but he admits that things could have been quite different if he had chosen the other team.
Earnhardt Jr. explained, “I don’t regret it, but probably going to Gibbs. When I was looking at what I was going to do after (DEI), I literally was only looking at Gibbs and Hendrick. I went and met with Gibbs, we had a great meeting, and they offered me a contract to sign. And then I went to meet with Rick and he offered me a contract to sign. I have no regrets over how all of that played out. But you cannot help but wonder, ‘What would it have been like had I went the other route?’”
Instead, Earnhardt Jr. raced for Hendrick Motorsports for the next ten years before retiring in 2017. People now speculate how much longer he would have continued racing if he had joined Joe Gibbs Racing.
