Cowboys trade for Pro Bowl CB Stephon Gilmore
The Cowboys just made a big move before free agency even started. On Tuesday, they added five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore to their defense in a trade with the Colts. The deal cost them a fifth-round pick, but they’re likely hoping Gilmore can help bolster their secondary.
Gilmore had a solid season with the Colts, playing in all 16 games. He’s been to the Pro Bowl five times in the past seven years and was named an All-Pro twice. In fact, in 2019, he was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year when he played for the Patriots.
Gilmore has bounced around quite a bit recently, playing for four different teams in the last four seasons. After spending eight years in New England, he went to the Panthers and had a Pro Bowl season in 2021, and then went to the Colts this past season.
The Cowboys could definitely use some help at cornerback after a rough 2022 season in which both Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis suffered season-ending injuries. While Trevon Diggs held down one side, they had to rely on a rotation of players on the other side, including rookie DaRon Bland and even veterans like Xavier Rhodes.
Gilmore is another veteran player for the Cowboys, but they believe he can still make a difference even though he’s 32 years old. He started his career with the Bills as a first-round pick in 2012 and spent five years with them before moving on to the Patriots, where he really shone. In fact, he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 when he had an NFL-leading six interceptions.
Gilmore played against the Cowboys last season when he was with the Colts and even swapped jerseys with Cowboys’ linebacker Micah Parsons after the game. Now, they’ll be teammates in Dallas.
