Courtney Vandersloot joins WNBA super team
New York Liberty has assembled its own super team
On Thursday, Courtney Vandersloot announced that she was joining Liberty. The four-time All-Star guard made her decision a day after MVP Breanna Stewart announced hers. Liberty also acquired the signature of MVP Jonquel Jones a while ago.
On her Twitter account, Courtney wrote, “Courtney Vandersloot is signing with the New York Liberty.”
The terms of the contract, however, are still being discussed for both Vandersloot and Stewart. Both these stars are currently in negotiations to be able to fit under the salary cap.
The New York franchise is currently aiming to win its first championship title. They are the only ones left to win the WNBA title out of the original active franchises.
The 33-year-old Vandersloot will join hands with the former No.1 overall draft pick, Sabrina Ionescu.
Background
Vandersloot herself was Chicago Sky’s 3rd overall pick during the 2011 draft. She even led the Sky to the 2021 WNBA championship win. During her 12 seasons with Chicago, she averaged 10.2 points and 6.6 assists per game in a tenure lasting 359 games and 328 as starts.
The new guard for liberty is coming back from consecutive All-Star seasons. She has also earned All-Star nods in 2019 and in her rookie season of 2011.
The Liberty open the 2023 season in Washington, D.C. on 23rd May as they take on the Mystics.
