Counter-Strike 2 is confirmed to launch this summer

Valve has announced that Counter-Strike 2 is officially on its way and will be released this summer. The company is inviting a limited number of players to test the game before its official launch. For those who already own CS:GO, the new game will be a free upgrade.

Visual Upgrade and Improved Gameplay

Valve has overhauled the game with its Source 2 engine, offering a massive visual upgrade with enhanced lighting effects and high-resolution models. Everything that players have acquired in CS:GO so far will carry over to the new game, and will look even better with the updated visuals.

Dynamic Volumetric Objects

One significant change comes in the form of dynamic volumetric smoke grenades that can react to gunfire, explosions, and the environment. Smoke grenades now react in a more lifelike way, filling up rooms and seeping out of broken windows and door cracks. Players can blow a portion of the smoke away to disperse it.

Boost to Environment Effects

There’s also a significant boost to environmental effects from things like C4 lighting, fire, and explosions. Valve is also making the Source 2 tools available for community map makers, which should make it easier to create stunning levels for the community to enjoy.

Limited Beta Test

Valve has already begun a limited beta test for select community players. While it’s not clear if the game will work on Steam Deck, CS:GO is labeled as playable, so there’s a chance that Counter-Strike 2 will be too.

Overall, Counter-Strike 2 is shaping up to be an exciting new game with a massive visual upgrade and improved gameplay. The fact that it will be a free upgrade for CS:GO players are excellent news, and it’s great to see Valve making the Source 2 tools available for community map makers. With the limited beta test already underway, it won’t be long before players can experience the new game for themselves.
