Costa Rican Soccer Player, Chucho, Loses Life in Crocodile Attack
Last week, a sad incident shook the Costa Rican community as a young soccer player, Jesus “Chucho” Lopez Ortiz, tragically lost his life in a crocodile attack near Santa Cruz.
Chucho, who was just 29 years old and a player for the local amateur club Deportivo Rio Canas in Carrillo, decided to take a swim in the Canas River. Unfortunately, the river was off-limits for fishing that day due to the presence of crocodiles.

The news of Chucho’s passing deeply affected his family, as he leaves behind two young children who will now grow up without their loving father. The soccer club Chucho played for expressed their grief and condolences, sharing their pain with his family.
The Club said, “With deep sorrow, we make public the death of our player Jesus Lopez Ortiz (Chucho) may God enjoy. Rest in Peace Chucho, we join the pain of all your family.”
The incident gained widespread attention when a video surfaced online, showing the crocodile carrying Chucho’s lifeless body in the water. Out of respect for Chucho’s family, we will not be sharing this distressing footage.
Local authorities swiftly responded to the tragedy by taking action to recover Chucho’s remains. They located and dealt with the crocodile responsible for the attack.
On Thursday, Chucho’s funeral took place, drawing a large crowd of mourners, highlighting the impact he had on the community.
During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Chucho’s loved ones, hoping they find strength and comfort in their cherished memories of the young soccer star who left us far too soon.
